Two successive fly baIIs stopped the 10th's attack and they retired on the short end of the 12-2 score. Nielson's superb pitching held San Marcos hitless for their last two times at bat. His innings on the mound were the brightest moments of an otherwise black day.It would be easy to credit their victory to our bad pitching but that isn't it. Look at the statistics; They stole nine bases; we stole none. San Marcos connected for 13 hits the Tenth's column reads 6. More than this was that tight Butterfly in field who seemed to gallop around in P-38s.
It used to be some consultation when the home team took a pasting to write afterwards that though we lost our uniforms were the prettiest and our band made more noise. But even here San Marcos had us beat. Their grounds were well kept and the grandstand (!) was full of women (strange, confusing things to put before the bivouacking ground forces ball players. Maybe these creatures slowed the boys).
The San Marcos band was top-notch and there was even a pop stand. This is the way to play a ball game. Even the Umps were professional, complete with serge suits, dinky caps. and bad eyes
It was San Marcos' 32nd game and our first. Sure, we took a beating but this writer is still prepared to exchange his field rations for a diet of baseballs and foot powder if the Division's team after a few warm-up games doesn't turn out to be one of the best in these parts.
