Camp Swift: A Recreational Camp?




When we hear the word "soldier" we usually picture a hardened, G.I. killing machine. But that is a total misconception. Soldiers at Camp Swift didn't just spend all the time training. So, what did 44,000 men do to keep themselves occupied? Played baseball! Thats right, the 10th Division had a baseball team. They played other camps all round the Bastrop area. Not only did they play other bases but they also competed amongst themselves. The soldiers had a regular Field Day in which they swam, played basketball, boxed, and held a ping - pong tournament.


Family was also welcome on the base. People everywhere bring their families to military bases, and people at Camp Swift were no exception. Many soldiers brought their "better halves" to live with them at the base. These adventurous women came to the base to be with their loved ones until the end of the war. DanceAnd whats the point in bringing your wife if you can't have at least one dance with the woman you're married to. Music was provided by one of the numerous Camp bands.
