The Role of Your School Nurse:
  • Provide health services including:
    • Vision/Hearing/Dental screening
    • Spinal screening
    • Height and weight screening
    • Medication administration
    • First aid and emergency care
    • Temporary care of ill students
    • Blood sugar testing/monitoring
    • Blood pressure monitoring
    • Asthma assessment and treatment
    • Other health related treatments for students with complex needs
  • Evaluate and assess health needs
  • Participate in parent/teacher/nurse conferences
  • Provide health counseling
  • Provide free immunizations to BMS students; click here for immunization requirements
  • Write objectives for the health component of an Individualized Education Plan
  • Conduct health related classroom presentations
  • Evaluate and monitor communicable and nuisance diseases
  • Detect and report suspected child abuse
  • Provide staff development
  • Act as a resource person for faculty and staff
  • Serve as liaison between home, school, and community

Goals:

  1. Promote wellness and positive lifestyles
  2. Provide health training for students, families, and staff
  3. Prevent illness through infection control practices and education
