Nomination Requirements
1. Students are selected for nomination on the basis of their cumulative grade point average. Students must have a 90% overall average for the first semester. Grades will not be rounded up.
2. Students who are eligible scholastically are notified and will be given a Student Activity Information Form to fill out. For further consideration for selection to the NJHS Chapter, students must complete and return the form by the specified date. The faculty council will review each of these forms.
3. Students must not have any entries on their discipline card. If a student receives a mark on their discipline card, their name will be submitted to the faculty council for review. The faculty council will then determine if their name will be eliminated from the list.
4. A list of nominated students will be submitted to the teachers and administrators for review. The teachers will submit names of students they feel do not meet the requirements of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service, and character. The faculty council will then review the teachers' comments and votes to eliminate students they feel do not meet the requirements of the National Junior Honor Society.
5. A revised list of students is prepared, and these students are informed of their selection by NJHS advisors in a general meeting.
6. Invitations to the induction are then given to the students.
Membership Requirements
1. Students need to maintain a 90% overall cumulative average in their classes.
2. If a student fails to maintain a 90% average, he or she will be placed on probation for the next marking period. If the student does not bring up the average within that time, the student will be referred to the NJHS faculty council. The faculty council will hear the student's case and decide to either extend the probation or dismiss the student from NJHS. If the student is dismissed, or resigns, he or she will not be eligible for NJHS membership again.
3. Students who fail any class during the marking period will automatically be placed on probation following the same procedure outlined in Item 2.
4. Students must complete 10 hours of community service by the end of the first semester and 8 hours of community service by May 1 for a total of 18 hours. A student may choose to do all hours during the summer time or during the school year. A student may start accumulating his or her hours only after they have been inducted. Forms for documenting service will be issued to the student.
5. Students must not have any entries on their discipline cards.
6. If a student receives an entry on their discipline card, he or she will be placed on probation. If the student receives a second entry on their discipline card, he or she will be referred to the NJHS faculty council. The faculty council will hear the student's case and decide whether to extend the probation or dismiss the student from NJHS. The student may choose to resign at any time before the hearing. If the student is dismissed or resigns, he or she will not be eligible for membership in NJHS again.
7. Students must have an S or E in their citizenship for all classes during any marking period. If a student receives an N or U, he or she will be placed on probation. If the student receives another N or U, he or she will be referred to the NJHS faculty council. The faculty council will hear the student's case and decide whether to extend the probation or dismiss the student from NJHS. The student may choose to resign at any time before the hearing. If the student is dismissed, he or she will not be eligible for membership in NJHS again.
