The Western Room was an addition to the original Bastrop County Historical Museum building. To locate the Western Room after you walk in, take a right and you will be in room 3, the Western Room, or consult the map on the homepage.

Saddle Side saddles from the 1800s.

The saddle shown in this picture was donated by Mrs. Frank Birmingham. Another side saddle that is in the room is on loan from the Robert W. Smith family. Robert lived in the Oak Hills Community in Bastrop County, Texas, from 1902 to 1937. He then moved to Bastrop, Texas. Robert bought this side saddle in 1912 from the General Store in Sayersville. It was shipped by rail from San Antonio. This saddle was $25.00. In 1920 Smith took the US Census for the McDale District and he rode by horse and saddle to contact each household in the district.

Skull Mastodon Skull

The lower skull of a mastodon was found on the first island in the Colorado River south of the Hwy 71 bridge in Bastrop County. The Balcones Research Center estimated the age of the skull to be between 9 and 20 million years old. It is on loan to the museum by Amanda Jane Berryhill who found the dinosaur skull on July 25, 1992.

Wheel Native American Exhibit

This Exhibit was prepared by Tonkawa Indians, showing their lifestlye while in Central Texas. The Tonkawas also donated pictures of bead work and of the chiefs and Indian princes. Read a story about Tonkawa cannabilism.

A satin basque jacket from the Julia Moncure collection is on show here along with many other clothes such as a silk black bonnet and a brown taffeta basque, a red dress and black button shoes. The silk bonnet was worn and owned by Mrs. Lance Trigg and was donated to the museum by her niece. The brown taffeta jacket is from the Julia Moncure collection. The red dress here was worn by Mary Davis Rivers and the black button shoes are from 1906. A hand crafted map of the Gotier Trace is also in the Western Room. A rawhide chair from the Colonial Period sits near this map. A picture of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Lehman standing in front of an old log house built about 1850 by Mr. Lehman's grandfather is on display in the Western room along with many other items. The house is located in Rockne and was built out of split walnut logs and chinked with flat stones.
