"Even though the community has grown, the heart of Bastrop, the heart of the town is still here.
We all have a sense of belonging - Bastrop is our town." Belle Cervantes, featured in the Building Bridges exhibit.
The Bastrop County Museum was established in 1952 when the newly organized Bastrop County Historical Society purchased this building. The Society began the collection and preservation of materials, artifacts, and documents relating to the history of the colony of Stephen F. Austin, Bastrop County, and the town of Bastrop (formerly Mina). Gathered here are many artifacts and records recalling pioneer days in Texas when Bastrop was a western frontier colony on the Old San Antonio Road, El Camino Real. During the Civil War, the building turned into a tannery making leather for shoes and saddles for the army. In 1952 the property was bought by the Bastrop County Historical Society and included the Old Ferry Crossing historical shrine.
